Talented artistic gymnast, Richard Mochrie (18) from Guildford is being supported by The Dairy Council in his pursuit of representing Great Britain at senior level.
The Dairy Council has teamed up with SportsAid in order to raise awareness of the benefits that milk can bring to sportsmen and women. Richard is one of four aspiring young athletes The Dairy Council is supporting this year.
Richard competed in the 2007 Men’s British Championships, finishing 5th overall in the all round category and won Gold medal at the 2007 UK School Games. In 2008, he came third at the British Under-18 Championships and is proving to be a serious and dedicated athlete in gymnastics.
Richard said: “Artistic gymnastics takes commitment and dedication. It is a really hard sport technically and I have had to work hard to get where I am today. I am thrilled that The Dairy Council recognises and has offered to support me.”
The Dairy Council announced their support for Richard at The Dairy Council’s Milk and Sport Seminar, held at the Institute of Physics in London. The seminar revealed recent research that showed the benefit of consuming milk for rehydration and to repair exercise-induced muscle damage.
Richard said: “'I am very well tuned to what my body needs to make me strong and agile as an athlete. But I hadn't realised how drinking milk could improve my performance. After hearing about the recent research on the benefits of drinking milk on my training it is something I am definitely going to start to incorporate into my diet.”
The Dairy Council is a non-profit making organisation that provides evidence-based nutrition information on the role of dairy foods in the diet. In the run up to the London Olympics in 2012, The Dairy Council is promoting the benefits of milk after physical activity and is raising awareness of the importance of a nutrient-dense diet for active people.
Dr Judith Bryans, Director of The Dairy Council, said: “We hope that by offering some funding to these four young, talented athletes we can help them fulfil their sporting ambition. It is a real priority for us to get across to our young athletes the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle. As shown by research presented at our recent seminar, milk can play a very important role in aiding recovery after sport. The Dairy Council is blown away by Richard’s talent, he has already achieved so much and we wish him every success.”
